Jacob Sheep History

Jacob Sheep History

Nehemiah 4 horned wetherJacob Sheep are one of the oldest domesticated breeds, tracing their lineage back 3000 years to ancient Syria.

They are said to be named for Jacob, who was the founding father of the 12 tribes of Israel and bred spotted sheep while working for his father-in-law.

Pictorial evidence places this breed in North Africa, Spain, Sicily, and England.

They were first imported into the United States in the early 1900's as zoo exhibits and curiousities.

Today, the American Jacob Sheep is listed as a rare breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.

Breed Information

Jacobs are considered a small to medium breed, ranging in weight from 80-180 lbs.

They have anywhere from 2-6 well-balanced horns.

All Jacobs are spotted, either black and white or grey(lilac) and white.

The most desired markings are colored eye patches, muzzle, random body spots not to exceed 80% color, spotted or white legs with black or striped feet.

The ewes lamb easily without assistance.

Jacobs tend to be resistant to disease and parasites.

They are good browsers, requiring less supplemental feed and range than some of the commercial breeds, and producing a leaner, flavorful meat product.

Their light, open fleece is prized by handspinners and their tanned pelts are widely sought after.
